Alright folks, with the clocks moving forward we know its almost our time to shine!

✅ Pros:
More daylight – Longer evenings mean more time to tend to and prep the garden
Warmer soil – Helps us prep the garden and get ready for planting season
Better timing – That extra sunlight helps keep everything on track for spring

Dont forget, frost is still very much a threat so adjust your routine accordingly and be patient!

All in all, it’s a good time to get ready for planting!

Did you see that mud in the rain today? Southern Illinois weather never fails to keep us on our toes. But if there’s one thing we know, it’s dirt—and good soil makes all the difference for happy plants!

Here are a few super simple ways to get your soil ready for spring:

🌱Mix in Compost – Adding food scraps, leaves, or bagged compost makes your soil rich and healthy.
🌱 Let the Worms Work – Worms help keep soil soft and full of nutrients. If you see them, that’s a good sign!
🌱 Check Drainage – If water puddles on top, mix in some sand or compost to help it drain better.
🌱 Cover with Mulch – A layer of straw, leaves, or wood chips keeps moisture in and weeds out.
🌱Don’t Overwork It – Too much digging or walking on your soil can make it hard and compacted—keep it loose and fluffy!

A little prep now means way healthier plants later!

Getting antsy to plant?

Spring fever hits early around here! With warm, sunny days in early April, it’s tempting to start planting—but don’t let those 70-degree afternoons fool you! Nights can still be cold, and frost can sneak in until April 15-20.

What should you plant & when?

-Mid-to-Late March – Hardy plants like pansies, broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower can handle the cool nights.

-Early April? Hold Off on Tender Annuals! – Plants may be available, but it’s risky. Cold nights can shock or kill tender flowers like petunias, begonias, and impatiens if planted too soon.

-Mid-to-Late April to Early May – Once we’re past April 15-20, it’s go-time for all annuals, veggies, and hanging baskets! If you’re planting in pots, you have the luxury of moving them in and out if temps drop.

Patience pays off! Wait until those frost-free days, and your flowers & garden will thrive all season long.

I had the pleasure of spending the day in Plant City, Florida with a group of fellow strawberry plant nurserymen learning about some new varieties of strawberries. I got to taste test and they were pretty tasty. I expect to have quite a few plants of this particular variety available this coming fall.Image attachmentImage attachment
